The Walther Q4/Q5 SF (Steel Frame) pistol series has established a unique category of its own: it is currently the only line of striker-fired pistols that feature a full steel frame. Moreover, this frame is not merely cast or molded — it is crafted from a solid steel forging, which is then precisely CNC-machined to the highest standards.
In terms of design, the Steel Frame series is based on the popular and proven PPQ platform and even shares some interchangeable components. These are semi-automatic pistols with a locked breech operating system based on the Browning–Petter principle (locking via an external barrel hood into the enlarged ejection port), featuring a tilting barrel and short recoil operation. The frame is made from solid steel, finely machined for maximum accuracy and durability. The trigger system is single-action with a pre-cocked internal striker, offering a consistent trigger pull in both weight and travel. Just like the PPQ family, the Steel Frame pistols are praised for their excellent ergonomics and intuitive, easily accessible controls. Regardless of the trigger variant used, these pistols offer outstanding trigger characteristics. The magazines are steel-bodied with either polymer or aluminum baseplates and are fully compatible with the PPQ series.
The Q4 Steel Frame PS (Phosphorescent Sights) is a duty-style pistol that maintains the proven ergonomics of the PPQ, while adding the weight and rigidity of an all-steel frame. If the Q5 Match Steel Frame is unique for combining a striker-fired mechanism with a full steel body in a competition-ready package, the Q4 SF goes even further: it is the only tactical or service pistol of its kind. Its added weight and balanced distribution offer significantly enhanced stability during shooting, allowing for faster and more controlled follow-up shots compared to polymer-framed pistols.
The controls are fully ambidextrous: the slide stop is extended and present on both sides, and the magazine release can be configured for either right- or left-handed use. The slide features aggressive front and rear serrations, making it easy to manipulate the pistol from any grip angle.
The steel frame includes a Picatinny accessory rail at the front for mounting lights or lasers, while the rear features a beavertail and interchangeable grip panels for optimal fit.
