The GSG MP40 chambered in 9 mm Luger is a semi-automatic rifle derived from the historic Maschinenpistole 40, which was produced between 1940 and 1944 by Erma and Steyr and manufactured in quantities exceeding one million units during the Second World War. This compact and highly manageable weapon followed earlier designs such as the MP36 and MP38 and became one of the most recognizable firearms of its era. The modern civilian version by German Sport Guns preserves the characteristic external appearance and fundamental design concept of the original firearm, while being configured as a legally compliant semi-automatic sporting rifle.
The firearm operates on a simple blowback system and is chambered for the 9×19 mm Luger cartridge. The receiver housing and frame are manufactured from zinc die-cast alloy, while the barrel is made from cold hammer-forged special steel. The bolt is machined from steel and designed as a precision-optimized unlocking system intended to achieve consistent accuracy. A robust extractor claw and an active ejector ensure reliable cartridge extraction and ejection during operation.
The trigger mechanism is configured as Single Action Only, with a factory trigger pull of approximately 3,200 grams, and the trigger is user-adjustable. Feeding is provided by a detachable magazine with a 10-round capacity, in line with civilian sporting regulations. The 10" (254 mm) rifled barrel features six grooves with a 406 mm twist rate and is not equipped with a muzzle thread. The overall barrel and bolt design support controlled and precise semi-automatic fire.
The firearm is fitted with adjustable mechanical sights with a sight radius of 397 mm, and the delivery includes five interchangeable front sight posts, allowing the sight picture to be tailored to the shooter’s preference. The folding stock is manufactured from metal, as are the receiver and grip frame, while the grip panels are made from polymer. The exterior finish is black, consistent with the historical appearance of the original MP40.
The rifle has an unloaded weight of 3,720 grams, and its overall length ranges from 605 mm to 825 mm, depending on the position of the folding stock. This model is approved for sporting use, as the original firearm design on which it is based predates 2 September 1945, thereby meeting the applicable legal criteria for civilian sporting firearms.
